Antique German Hand-Painted Porcelain Plaque of "Ruth" Late 19th-early 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown (After Charles Zacharie Landelle) Materials: Hand-painted porcelain (hard-paste) tile and gilt-gesso wood frame Marking(s): None Cataloguer's Note: This late 19th to early 20th-century antique porcelain plaque is a finely executed hand-painted rendering of "Ruth in the Cornfield," after the celebrated 1859 biblical masterpiece by French academic painter Charles Zacharie Landelle (1821–1908). The three-quarter-length composition depicts the biblical figure Ruth standing in a golden wheat field during a vibrant twilight sky, cradling a large sheaf of harvested grain under her arm. High-quality porcelain plaques of this theme were popularized by premier German porcelain manufacturers, most notably Berlin's Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM), and were highly coveted luxury collectibles across Europe and North America.
