African Dagari Ancestor Wood Figure 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown Materials: Wood Marking(s): None Cataloguer's Note: The rough, encrusted texture you see on the surface comes from ritual patination. Over years of use in an ancestral shrine, these figures were repeatedly bathed in ceremonial offerings such as millet gruel, palm wine, and animal blood. As these organic materials dried and layered over the wood, they created a thick, dark, and sometimes stone-like crust that masks the grain of the wood underneath.
