Ghisi, Giorgio The Allegory of Birth. Copperplate engraving after Giulio Romano. 27.2 x 41.5 cm. (1558). B. 57, Bellini 38, Lewis/Lewis 26 IV (of V). Mark: grapes. The composition is based on a preparatory drawing by Giulio Romano, which was created for a mural fresco painted around 1531 in the Loggia del Grotto at the Palazzo del Te in Mantua. An excellent print with a very fine border around the frame line; at the bottom, it is partially cut into the image, so that only a few strokes of the cursive script in Jollain’s address are still visible. The third state, featuring Jollain’s address, is extremely rare; Lewis/Lewis were aware of only a single copy in Milan’s Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. Minimally stained; on the reverse, a slight smoothed center fold with a minimal restoration at the bottom center; other signs of age; otherwise in good condition. Accompanied by four copperplate engravings depicting ceiling scenes (B. 36–39) by the same artist. - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
