Florentine probably around 1490. *Inferno*—The Fresco of Hell in the Camposanto in Pisa. Copperplate engraving after Buonamico Buffalmacco. 22.2 x 28.3 cm. "Questo Elinferno del Chaposan To +di Pisa+". Hind A.I.20, TIB (Commentary) .028. Inscribed by Van Gelder. The print depicts a detail from the fresco “The Last Judgment and Hell” in the Camposanto in Pisa, which was originally attributed to Andrea di Cione, known as Orcagna, but is now considered a masterpiece by the Florentine artist Buonamico Buffalmacco. The engraver of our print, likely a Florentine artist, remains unknown, but is thought to have been associated with Baccio Baldini’s circle. An excellent print, in places still vigorous, though a later impression with a narrow margin. Dusty, the edges bumped and showing crease marks; remnants of mounting in the upper white corners; a repaired tear in the lower margin; creases and signs of wear; otherwise in good condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
