Daret, Pierre The Unfaithful Wife and Her Lover. Copperplate engraving. 29.6 x 34.5 cm. "Philippe Huar excud.". Mark: grape and secondary mark. The young lady mockingly hands the old man a pair of glasses so he can see that his time for love (“le jeu de Cypris”) is over and he should make way. An engraving depicting a man standing behind a woman and pinning a rose to her bosom. She hands a magnifying glass to an older man on the right so he can examine the “flower.” The three columns of text explain the theme of this engraving as “Life and Impotence.” The young couple’s hair has been “styled in the same way” by love. Excellent print with a knurled edge. Center fold smoothed out, top and bottom cracked and backed, some foxing, mounting residue on the reverse, other minor signs of age. From the collection of Eduard Fuchs, Zehlendorf near Berlin (not listed in Lugt).
