Brizio, Francesco Christ and the Samaritan Woman. Copperplate engraving after Annibale Carracci. 28.9 x 40.2 cm. 1610. B. (Annibale Carracci) 7, TIB (Annibale Carracci) .031, B. (Guido Reni) 52, TIB (Guido Reni, Rejected Works) .0039xx; TIB (Francesco Brizio, Commentary) .048 S4. Watermark: Crowned circle with fleur-de-lis. In the literature, the attribution to Guido Reni is disputed. Bartsch and Bellori had still attributed the print to Reni, who, according to them, used a sopraporte painting by his master Carracci in the Palazzo Sampieri in Bologna as a model. However, neither the style nor the linework supports a Reni attribution. Since Malvasia, several authors have attributed the engraving to Francesco Brizio. An absolutely superb print with delicate smudges and a very fine border around the plate edge, partially cut into it. On the reverse, a slight smoothed center fold and small mounting residues; otherwise in impeccable condition. Accompanied by an etching attributed to Guido Reni, “Mary with the Child Sleeping on Her Lap.” - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
