Bernini, Giovanni Lorenzo—after after. Portrait of Ottaviano Castelli. Etching. 21.4 x 13.9 cm. (1641). Not listed in Bartsch, Exhibition Catalog: Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Regista del Barocco, Rome 1999, pp. 412–413, no. 169. This print, long unknown to Bernini scholars, was not linked to the artist until 1999. Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi is considered the creator of the etching, which is based on a preparatory drawing by Bernini. The portrait was created in connection with the published edition of the libretto written by Ottaviano Castelli for the opera *La Sincerità Trionfante*, which premiered in 1638. Excellent, rich-toned print with a narrow margin around the plate edge, which shows some ridges from the printing process. Slightly stained, with an inconspicuous horizontal center fold; otherwise very fine. Very rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
