Baldung, Hans [*] The Virgin and Child on a Grass Bench. Woodcut. 23.5 x 16 cm. (1505). B. (Dürer) app. 13, Hollstein 65 II. Mark: Circle with an “A” and two small “M”s (cf. Meder 288, ca. 1580). This print, formerly attributed to Albrecht Dürer, was created around 1505 while Hans Baldung was working in the Nuremberg master’s workshop. The depiction is related to Dürer’s “The Virgin with the Monkey” as well as the work of the same name. The treatment of small details, such as the heads, and the characteristic rendering of the wavy curls are also evident in Baldung’s later works. The connection to Dürer is further evidenced by the Dürer monogram, which appears here in its second state. An excellent print, partly with a slightly dry impression featuring the border, and partly with traces of a white border. Slightly dusty; on the reverse, inconspicuously smoothed crease marks in the center and along the folds; a short diagonal crease in the lower left corner; otherwise very nicely preserved. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
