Uhl, Joseph "Cupid's Homage." Etching, drypoint, and aquatint on Similijapan. 30.5 x 33.5 cm. Signed, numbered "31," and titled. Circa 1913. The dynamic scene is defined by the strong chiaroscuro, the curtain billowing in the wind, and the intense visual connection between the protagonists. Cupid, with his quiver, hovers on a small cloud above the windowsill and is about to adorn the woman standing before him with flowers. The handwritten title in the lower left corner clearly identifies the motif as “Cupid’s Homage.” A motif with this title is part of the 12-part suite *A Mystery of Love*, published in 1913; however, it presents a completely different interpretation of the theme. This sheet is therefore likely a discarded design concept that did not make it into the numbered edition. It is also significant that it was printed on the same paper as the prints outside the numbered edition (see Lot 5389). A magnificent, high-contrast, and extremely harmonious print with a delicately washed plate tone, featuring a wide margin and the full deckle edge on two sides. Isolated, small foxing spots; slight creasing along the left and bottom margins; the outer margins are marginally wavy; otherwise in impeccable and original condition. Rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
