Uhl, Joseph "Question to Fate." Etching and aquatint on Similijapan. 26.5 x 41 cm. Signed, numbered “30,” and presumably titled in the artist’s own hand in the lower left corner; signed by the publisher “Heinr. Wetteroth München gdr” in the white margin below the image. Before 1913. The human need to have one’s own future foretold is explored here. Monolithic and larger-than-life, Fate is depicted as a veiled figure with her left hand raised. The young woman’s question still seems unanswered; she remains suspended in a moment between hope and supplication. The scene is framed by the figure of worry, depicted twice, looking over her shoulder. Excellent print with a wide margin, featuring a cut margin on the left and bottom. Minimal foxing and slight creasing in the white margin; the sheet edges are slightly bumped; a small stain on the reverse upper left; pencil annotations; overall in fine condition. Rare. Accompanied by the same artist’s etching “Old Man with a Cane in a Field of Wheat—Sorrow” from 1909, signed—this is likely a previously unknown version of “Sorrow,” probably an initial concept for the image. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
