Klinger, Max Rescues of Ovidian Victims, Opus II. Typographic title page and 15 etchings, mostly with aquatint, on Similijapan. Large folio. Loose sheets in original passe-partout, housed in an original half-parchment folder with three flaps (slightly scuffed). 1879. Singer 25–39, based on the fifth edition. The sixth edition, published in 1922 by Amsler & Ruthardt in Berlin. “In literary history, Lessing is particularly known for his ‘rescues’ (of Cardan and Lemnius)—that is, the restoration of the good reputation of a man to whom history has inflicted undeserved harm. Klinger assumes that Ovid, too, saw the true reputations of several of his heroes fall victim to history, and he sets out to rescue them. In a satire, however, they fare much worse in such a rescue than they do in Ovid” (Singer 1909, p. 11). Excellent prints on full sheets, some with watermarks. Very isolated foxing in the outermost margins; otherwise in excellent and original condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
