Gering, Andreas Life, Death. Foreword, table of contents, and 13 etchings and lithographs on Similijapan and handmade paper. Each approx. 40.2 x 57 cm (sheet size). Loose sheets in an illustrated half-linen folder. All signed; ten of the sheets are additionally dated and titled in the artist’s own hand; the table of contents is signed by Walter Möhring. 1917. The atrocities with which Andreas Gering was confronted during World War I shaped his artistic work of that period. He himself was buried under rubble after a bombing raid and rescued with serious injuries. The complete, virtually untraceable portfolio “Life, Death” can certainly be considered Gering’s major graphic work. The series includes the prints: “At Harvest Time,” “The Storm,” “The Red Hunter,” “The Peacemaker,” “Too Late,” “The Hand Grenade,” “The Storm Song,” “Impacting Projectile,” “The Relay,” “Before the Battle,” “The Good Comrade,” “Bells of Peace,” and “All Souls’ Day.” All are magnificent prints with full margins. The wide white outer margins show some creases and wrinkles and isolated tiny tears; sheet 1, “Zur Ernte,” has a tear in the upper left corner of the white margin, but is otherwise in excellent and completely original condition. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
