Odevaere, Joseph Denis Self-Portrait. Lithograph. 50.5 x 36.6 cm. 1816. Lang 39, McAllister Johnson 5. This rare self-portrait depicts Odevaere—the outstanding history painter, portraitist, and lithographer of Flemish Neoclassicism—standing before his easel, holding a lithographic stone and a chalk holder. His face and hands are rendered with great sensitivity through the finest chalk strokes and softly graded light. While the easel and the self-portrayal while drawing reflect artistic self-presentation, the Order of Merit—awarded this year—on his lapel points to his successful role as a government representative in Paris. An excellent print with a wide margin. A small closed tear in the right margin, minor signs of wear, otherwise very well preserved. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
