Merz, Caspar Heinrich The Madhouse. Copperplate engraving on vellum after Wilhelm von Kaulbach. 52.3 x 68.3 cm. (1835). Apell 16 before I (of II), Nagler 2, Heller/Andresen 14. The etching was created after a drawing by Wilhelm von Kaulbach bearing the same title. It depicts a fictional gathering in the courtyard of a madhouse; the meticulous portrayal of various states of mind is striking, with each figure representing different types of mental illness—such as the pretentious philosopher, the king, the melancholic, the woman pining for love, and religious fanatics. The multi-layered composition was inspired primarily by Kaulbach’s engagement with the work of the English artist William Hogarth. According to Guido Görres, the figure holding the letter to Merz and burying his face in his arms is Kaulbach himself. An excellent and crisp early print from the unfinished plate, predating further works, with the artist’s name and the title in the lower margin. Somewhat stained overall, with various small marginal discolorations and tears, primarily in the white margin; the edges are bumped; water stains on the right; additional creases and signs of wear; otherwise well preserved. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
