Grimm, Ludwig Emil The Children’s Exam. Etching. 15.5 x 20.4 cm. 1820. Andresen 140, Stoll 171, Exhibition catalog: Ludwig Emil Grimm. 1790–1833. Painter, Draftsman, Etcher, Kassel-Hanau 1985, pp. 165–66, ill. no. 115. Genre scenes—depictions of episodes from the lives of ordinary people—play a significant role in Grimm’s body of work in printmaking and drawing. A fine example is this depiction of a monastery school, a subject Grimm developed in 1820, a few years after moving to Kassel, the capital of Hesse. The seated schoolmaster is testing the children in a class, while a monk listens in silence. Noteworthy is the tallest boy, whose face appears almost grimacing and who also appears in a drawing Grimm produced in 1825. An excellent, sharp print with a wide margin. Some foxing there, other minimal signs of age; otherwise in superb condition. Accompanied by the etching “The Two Capuchins with the Owl” (Stoll 172) by the same artist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
