Grimm, Ludwig Emil Portrait of Charlotte Amalie Grimm. Etching on rolled China paper. 12 x 8.2 cm. 1820. Stoll 46 II. Charlotte, also known as Lotte or Malchen, was the youngest of the five Grimm siblings. Following the early death of their mother in 1806, she managed the Grimm household and married Ludwig Hassenpflug in 1822. For Christmas 1820, Jacob Grimm gave his siblings a “household book for our whole lives” containing a calendar, family records, and this portrait of Lotte on the first page. This gift from Jacob reflected his desire to keep the parentless family together and to strengthen the bonds among the siblings. His brother Ludwig Emil portrayed his sister “from life” in Kassel in 1820 with loving attention, depicting her in a serious and pensive manner, with an artfully braided hairstyle and a wide lace collar. An excellent, sharp print with a wide margin. Slightly foxed, otherwise in excellent condition. Rare. - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is only listed in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
