Bemme, Johannes Adriaansz. A Scholar in His Study. Etching after Michiel Versteegh. 25.2 x 30.1 cm. Wurzbach 5. The etcher Johannes Bemme apprenticed with his father, the goldsmith and medal engraver Adriaan Jansz. Bemme, and later studied in Rotterdam under the portrait painter August Christian Hauck and the better-known painter and draftsman Dirk Langendijk. In The Hague, he worked primarily as a medalist and also served as a reproduction engraver on the side. This composition is based on a painting by the Dordrecht painter Michiel Versteegh, who created genre scenes in the style of the Dutch Golden Age. Executed in a detailed, meticulous etching technique, this sheet is presented here as an unfinished proof, prior to the shading of the background and the hatching on the illuminated objects. The etching is rare, especially in this early state of printing. A magnificent, sharp print with an even margin. Minimal signs of age; otherwise, in excellent condition. From the Théodore Hippert Collection (Lugt 1377). - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
