Schmidt, Martin Johann Oriental Woman with a Dog. Etching. 10.8 x 7.2 cm. 1749. Garzarolli-Thurnlackh 2 II, Feuchtmüller 30. This rare etching belongs to a group from the artist’s early work that focuses on depictions of Orientals. Together with four other etchings of Orientals—all created in 1749 or, in one case, 1750—which all bear the characteristic youthful monogram M: I: S:, these prints are regarded as Schmidt’s first attempts at the etching technique. The thoroughly free, loose etching style, along with the numerous smudges and plate marks, lend the print a highly experimental character. A magnificent, warm-toned print with numerous vertical smudges, featuring a very fine edge around the jagged-edged facets, with plate soot on the right. On the reverse, minor signs of wear and slight mounting residue; otherwise in impeccable and excellent condition. Rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
