Pierre, Jean-Baptiste Marie The Adoration of the Shepherds (The Virgin with the Child on Her Lap; a bagpiper in the foreground). Etching. 25.4 x 17.5 cm. Circa 1740. Le Blanc 1, exhibition catalog *Artists and Amateurs: Etching in 18th-Century France*, ed. Perrin Stein, New York 2013–14, p. 111, no. 63. *The Adoration of the Shepherds* captivates with its unusual composition and interpretation of what is essentially a Christian scene, which Pierre seems to have drawn, to some extent, from Italian folk life, very much in the style of the Bamboccianti. A magnificent print with fine detail, featuring a narrow margin at the bottom surrounding the sharply defined image. Slightly foxed, faint pencil annotations on the reverse, thin in places at the corner tips, a small, slightly frayed loss in the lower right corner with minimal staining there; otherwise very nicely preserved. Rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
