Moles i Coronas, Pasqual Pere The Virgin and Child as a Shepherdess Surrounded by Lambs. Etching after Francesco Tramulles. 16.4 x 11.3 cm. 1763. Not listed in Nagler. The son of bookseller Salvador Moles, Pasquale received his training from José Vergara and Vicent Galcerà in his hometown of Valencia. In 1759, he continued his studies in painting under Francesco Tramulles in Barcelona, whose work served as the model for this etching. After traveling and furthering his studies in Paris—including under Charles-Nicolas Cochin—Moles returned to Barcelona and was appointed the first director of the “Escuela Gratuita de Diseño” (now known as the Escola de la Llotja) the following year. He followed the academic style of Anton Raphael Mengs and opposed the guilds of painters and sculptors. After a period of mental instability, Moles took his own life in 1797 by throwing himself from a high window of the Llotja. An excellent, transparent print with margins. Overall somewhat dusty and stained, with crease and fold marks, other signs of handling, a backed tear in the reclining lamb on the right, pen annotations on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. Rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
