Koch, Joseph Anton Charon’s Boat with Souls Crossing the Styx. Etching. 32.9 x 37.7 cm. 1807/08. Andresen 22, Nagler 2, Frances Carey and Antony Griffiths: German Printmaking in the Age of Goethe, London 1994, no. 102, with ill. Koch was a great admirer of Italian poetry and read the entire Divine Comedy in Italian; it is said that Koch recited the verses by heart during his walks through Rome. By 1802 at the latest, Koch had intended to illustrate Dante; in the evenings and on rainy days, he worked on the Divine Comedy, as he informed the publisher Frauenholtz in a letter from that same year. By that time, a large portion of the *Inferno* had already been completed. A magnificent print with wide margins around the strikingly rendered image. Slightly stained or with foxing, minor signs of handling, and small handwritten annotations in the lower margin; otherwise in fine and original condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
