Bartolozzi, Francesco Lord Ashburton. Etching after Joshua Reynolds. 52.2 x 38.1 cm. De Vesme/Calabi 752 I (of V). Bartolozzi etched this portrait of the English lawyer and politician John Dunning, Baron Ashburton, after a painting by Joshua Reynolds (Tate Gallery, Inv. N06244), in which, unlike in the print, he is depicted together with his wife. Ashburton came from a family of lawyers, served as a Member of Parliament, and, beginning in 1768, acted as Solicitor General, serving as legal advisor to the Crown. This is an extremely rare print from the first state, etched exclusively without the use of a graver. Another copy is held by the British Museum (Inv. 1831,0520.71). An excellent print with plate soot and needle marks in the white margins, with a narrow margin around the sharply defined plate edge. A crease in the lower left corner; minimally browned and dusty; otherwise in excellent and original condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
