Wierix, Hieronymus Christ on the Cross, with Mary Magdalene kneeling below. Copperplate engraving after Maarten de Vos. 27.2 x 19.9 cm. Before 1611. Mauquoy-Hendrickx 357, Hollstein (Vos) 663, Hollstein (Wierix) 692. Wierix created two versions of the Crucifixion scene featuring the kneeling Mary Magdalene, based on a work by Maarten de Vos. While in the second, later version the edges of the plate were rounded and the lower border line was erased, the earlier version offered here still bears the name of Hieronymus Wierix in the lower margin as well as additional details. It is unclear why Wierix created a second, nearly identical variant. It is possible that the first copper plate was damaged during the printing process. This original version attests to the technical virtuosity and masterful command of the medium that are so characteristic of Hieronymus. A magnificent print with traces of a fine knurling around the plate edge. Minimal signs of age; originally mounted in a window mat; otherwise in very fine condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
