Trento, Antonio da The Madonna with the Infant Jesus and the Young St. John (also: The Madonna with the Rose). Two-block chiaroscuro woodcut in black and brown, after Parmigianino. 19.1 x 23.4 cm. B. XII, p. 56, 12 (anonymous), Gnann 71, Takahatake 26. In Bartsch’s catalog, the woodcut was still listed as anonymous, after Parmigianino; however, Zanetti had already pointed out that Vasari listed the work among da Trento’s prints. Since then, it has been unanimously regarded as part of his oeuvre and one of his most graceful depictions. An excellent, still striking print featuring the entire rectangular tone block—which is otherwise often cropped—although the black line block already shows some chips. Uniformly narrow margins. Slightly dusty, vertical crease marks, a vertical crush crease in the center—cracked and backed at the top and closed at the bottom—some foxing, especially along the margins and on the reverse, two short tears at the top and on the right in the white margin; otherwise very well preserved. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
