B. 33, Hollstein 113 IV, Leesberg (New Hollstein, Goltzius) 628, each in final state. Marked with a crowned lily coat of arms. The complete series, which depicts the Punishment of Niobe in detailed narrative sequences, consists of a total of eight copperplate engravings of equal size arranged to form a long frieze. The series was created based on drawings by Hendrick Goltzius—now lost—which he produced during his trip to Italy, based on Polidoro da Caravaggio’s frescoes on the façade of the Palazzo Milesi (later Palazzo Cesi) in Rome. Only part of the palazzo survives today. Excellent, uniform prints with a fine margin around the plate edge. All mounted on larger 18th-century backing sheets with black-ink borders; on sheet 4, the border extends minimally into the white margin at the lower left. Minimally browned, with other minor signs of age; otherwise, very fine, uniform copies.
