Rosati, Ferrantes David with the Head of Goliath. Etching. 24.9 x 18.4 cm. 1649. B. 1, TIB (Commentary), 001 I (of II), Nagler 1 I (of II). Mark: Lily within a circle surmounted by a crown. The painter and etcher Ferrantes Rosati was most likely active in Rome around 1650 and left behind a small body of printmaking work consisting of only six etchings, which were described by Adam von Bartsch and are all extremely rare. The print runs were presumably very small, and only this sheet has a second state of printing, which was published by the Roman publisher Vincenzo Billy. The majority of these prints are graphic reproductions of works by other artists, including Agostino Carracci, Simone Cantarini, and Domenico Cerrini. This etching, however, is likely the artist’s own original creation. Excellent, even impression with a fine knurled edge around the plate margin. Minimal signs of age; otherwise in superb condition. From the collection of the Princes d’Arenberg (Lugt 567). - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
