Parmigianino, Francesco The Healing of the Lame Man at the Temple Gate. Etching with two tone blocks in ochre and light brown, after Raphael. 26.9 x 40.7 cm. Vol. XVI, p. 10, 7 II, Mistrali 1 III, Gnann 32, Takahatake 38, Jenkins (The Renaissance of Etching, exhibition catalog, New York 2019) no. 58 IV (of V), Jenkins (“States of Francesco Parmigianino’s Etchings: A New Catalogue,” in: Print Quarterly, XLIII, 2, 2026) No. 18 IV (of V). In this experimental work, Parmigianino combines the two media of etching and woodcut for the first time. Overall, the etching technique appears somewhat sketchy and simplified compared to the master’s other prints; however, Jenkins and Takahatake explain this by noting that from the outset, the plan was to supplement the intaglio with color blocks. The color blocks were presumably carved by Antonio da Trento or Ugo da Carpi. Featuring the engraving work on the line plate, including the vertical lines behind the head of the woman with the child on the left and the enhanced shadows on Peter’s face. An excellent print—as described for this state, with stronger yet balanced colors—featuring the full composition. Slightly dusty; tears and glazes primarily in the left half of the sheet, including a vertical tear between Peter and John and another in the white highlight area of the column; furthermore, several tears and minor missing areas in the group of figures on the left and the margin area below it, two additional tears at the right margin and a small loss next to the twisted column; retouching in all these areas, mounted and edged with black pen; further signs of age and wear; nevertheless, the overall impression is good. - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
