Ostade, Adriaen van Paying the Bill. Etching. 10.4 x 8.7 cm. Circa 1652. B. 42, Dutuit V (of IX), Davidsohn V (of IX), Godefroy VI (of XII), Hollstein 42 VII (of XIV), Giordani/Rutgers (New Hollstein) 22 III (of XI). In front of the thin horizontal lines on the mantelpiece. A magnificent, warm-toned, and wonderfully nuanced early print with a subtle plate tone and a very fine edge around the sharply defined facets, with a few smudges in the white plate margin surrounding the image. Minor signs of wear, insignificant adhesive marks on the reverse, a thin spot in the upper left corner of the reverse with delicate fraying; otherwise a perfect and impeccably beautiful specimen. Extremely rare in this early, atmospheric print style. From the collections of Henry Brodhurst (Lugt 1296), Richard Gutekunst (Lugt 2213a, from his auction at Klipstein & Kornfeld on May 23, 1962, Lot 276), and Paolo Giordani (Lugt 3688), and finally the private collection of Eduard Trautscholdt (not listed in Lugt). - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
