Liefrinck, Hans The Circumcision of John the Baptist. Etching after Jan Swart of Groningen. 23.9 x 18.4 cm. (1558). Hollstein (Liefrinck) 4, Hollstein (after Swart) 5. Born in Augsburg, Hans Liefrinck moved to Antwerp in 1526 and began working as a publisher, releasing prints by artists such as the Amsterdam woodcutter Cornelis Anthonisz. Later, he competed with Hieronymus Cock, who also ran the prominent publishing house Aux Quatre Vents in Antwerp. The plates for the ten-part series “The Life of John the Baptist” were likely erroneously attributed to Jacob Floris; however, Jan Swart’s initials are noted on some of the copperplate engravings. A magnificent, even print, cut directly to the image. Only slightly dusty; mounted and then additionally mounted in the corners on album paper; otherwise in very fine condition. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
