Leyden, Lucas van The Raising of Lazarus. Copperplate engraving. 28.3 x 20.3 cm. Circa 1507. B. 42, Hollstein 42 II, Filedt Kok (New Hollstein) 42 a (of c), Ruth E. Fine, Lessing J. Rosenwald: *Tribute to a Collector*, Washington 1982, p. 159, No. 53 (this copy). Mark: Gothic P with four-leaf clover (cf. New Hollstein, Gothic P, p. 286, similar to 9b, c. 1481–1525/26). Beginning in 1507, a series of large-format, vigorously engraved plates featuring scenes with numerous figures was produced, of which the “Raising of Lazarus” is likely one of the earliest. An absolutely excellent, vigorous print with rich plate tone. Somewhat stained; various, extremely careful repairs, especially along the edges, some of which feature delicate and inconspicuous pen retouching; a short tear at the top edge; a repaired area in the sky at the top center between the trees; a slight horizontal center crease; with faint and unobtrusive retouching there, also featuring subtle pen retouching; further signs of age and wear; otherwise, however, in good condition; very rare in this rich and full print style. From the collection of the Princes of Liechtenstein; sold in 1949 by Richard H. Zinser, Stuttgart, and subsequently owned by Lessing Julius Rosenwald (neither listed in Lugt). - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
