Halins, Nicolas—attributed Attributed. A triumphal procession of sixteen figures in ancient costume. Etching after Jean Cousin (?) 4.2 x 24.6 cm. Uninscribed. Very few biographical details have survived about the painter Nicolas Halins. Documentary sources indicate that the artist was active in Fontainebleau in the 1540s and produced a total of four etchings based on designs by Jean Cousin (see C. Jenkins: *Prints at the Court of Fontainebleau, ca. 1542–77*, 2014, Part I, pp. 30–31). Halins worked in Fontainebleau as an assistant in Primaticcio’s studio and was married to Jeanne Cousin, the daughter of Jean Cousin. Around 1551, the artist is documented in Paris, where he belonged to the local painters’ guild. This small, evocative print shows certain stylistic parallels with Halin’s etching *Deucalion and Pyrrha* after Jean Cousin (Herbet, 1969 edition, A. 189, No. 3; Jenkins NH 3). In particular, the depiction and gestures of the small, lively background figures show similarities to the protagonists on our frieze. Excellent, rich-toned print with a fine border. Old mount. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
