Goes, Marinus Robyn van der The Adoration of the Shepherds. Copperplate engraving after Jacob Jordaens. 46.1 x 35 cm. Hollstein 1 II-III (of V). Marked with the letter W (or M). Together with Hans Witdoeck, Marinus van der Goes was a student of Lucas Vorsterman around 1630; in 1632, he was admitted to the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke and shortly thereafter received the title of master craftsman. In the few remaining years of his life—he died as early as 1639—he worked primarily as a reproduction engraver, creating works based on paintings by important contemporaries such as Rubens, Saftleven, and Brouwer. Hollstein lists a total of only 20 prints in his oeuvre. The present composition is based on a painting by Jacob Jordaens, which is now housed in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp. Our copy is a print state not described by Hollstein: Although the addition of the fourth finger on the hand beneath the chicken coop is already visible in the third state, the addition “Cum Privilegio” is still present at the bottom margin, as is characteristic of the second state. An excellent, uniform print with a very fine margin around the plate edge, cut in some places right up to it. Slightly stained, smoothed horizontal center fold, two minor retouched edge discolorations on the right, isolated small closed pinholes, other minor signs of age and wear; otherwise in very fine condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
