Galle, Philips The Four Elements. 4 copper engravings. Each approx. 19.1 x 24.2 cm. 1564. TIB 56, .086, Hollstein 365–368, Sellink/Leesberg (New Hollstein) 365–368, each with a second impression. Maltese cross with two trefoils above it. This series of The Four Elements, the first sheet of which is dated 1564 and bears the title “Terra,” is among the earliest works by Philips Galles that he published through his own press in Haarlem. The theme of “The Four Elements,” like the motifs of “The Four Seasons,” “The Planets,” or the “Twelve Months,” to the common iconographic vocabulary of the time. For his allegorical depiction, Galle chose the gods Cybele (Earth), Jupiter (Fire), Juno (Air), and Neptune (Water). In contrast to other contemporary series on the elements, in which the deities are often depicted with numerous background figures and elaborate symbolism, Galle dispenses with iconographic embellishments, apart from the respective symbols and elements associated with each. This minimalist approach is characteristic of Galle’s copperplate engravings. Excellent, uniform prints with wide margins; the “Terra” print features a fine knurled edge at the bottom. Slight signs of age and wear, minor fingerprints, slight discoloration along the margins; otherwise in uniform and very good condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
