Fontana, Giovanni Battista The Carrying of the Cross. Etching and engraving. 32.8 x 27.2 cm. B. 12. watermark eagle. The painter, draughtsman and engraver Giovanni Battista Fontana was significantly influenced by Titian, Veronese and Giulio Romano in his early years in Verona. From 1562, Fontana worked in Vienna and then in Innsbruck, where he was appointed court painter to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in 1575. Bartsch and Passavant have attributed just over seventy sheets to Fontana, most of which were executed as etchings and reworked with the engraver's burin. Excellent impression with fine margins around the framing line, with the framing line still visible in places at the bottom. Minimal traces of age, otherwise a very good copy.
