Coornhert, Dirk Volkertsz. The greater the happiness, the greater the worries (“hoe hoogher fortuijn, zo meerder sorghe”). Copperplate engraving with etching. 20 x 24.2 cm. Not listed in Hollstein, TIB (Supplement) .069.4. Wz. Krüglein. From the six-part series “Maxims on Happiness.” Coornhert himself may have been the intellectual author of this series on the transience of happiness, as its didactic and moral message closely aligns with the content of his writings. Excellent, predominantly sharp print with very narrow margins on three sides, trimmed at the bottom to the text. Isolated minor creases, faint spots; the lower left margin is damaged and has backed-in missing areas, with retouching in the first two words there; the upper right plate edge has a backed-in tear, and there is also a tear in the white margin above it; mounting residues and minimal glue spots on the reverse; otherwise in good condition. Even individual sheets from this series are very rare. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
