Carracci, Annibale St. Jerome in the Wilderness. Copperplate engraving and etching. 25.4 x 18.8 cm. Circa 1591. B. 14, Bohlin 13 IV, TIB (Commentary) .015 S4. Bartsch had already praised this major work by Annibale Carracci: “Cette pièce est gravée à l’eau-forte avec esprit et légèreté; l’expression et le dessin y sont admirables” (B. XVIII, p. 190). The print exerted a great influence on Italian and Northern European artists, including Rembrandt, who greatly admired the etching. - An excellent, still vivid print, though partially missing in places, with a few smudges and scribbles; mostly showing the full image, with traces of the plate edge at the top left. Slightly dusty and rubbed; slight retouching in the upper right in the view of the mountains and on the tree trunk; a closed tear in the margin on the right; a smoothed center fold on the reverse; other minor imperfections; otherwise in good condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
