Callot, Jacques [*] *Les Grandes Misères de la guerre*. 17 (of 18) etchings, including the title page, on yellowish-gold silk. Each approx. 8 x 18.3 cm. All bound or mounted in an elegant 19th-century red leather album, smooth morocco (slightly rubbed, with light scratches and scuffs), with rich ornamental gilding on the spine and a gold-embossed spine title “J. Callot / Les miseres et les mal-heurs de la guerre / Paris 1633,” triple cover fillets, large gold-embossed cover ornament, double spine fillet, wide inner edge border over marbled colored paper endpapers, gold-edged pages. 1633. Meaume 564–578, 580–581, Lieure 1339 III, 1340–1353, 1355, each II (of III), 1356 III (of IV). Callot’s most significant series, presented here in an almost complete set—only sheet 16, Lieure 1354, is missing—in an exceptionally rare luxury edition printed on yellowish, gold-shimmering silk. Excellent to very excellent prints, naturally showing partial, minimal irregularities or omissions; numbered, but with the address of Israël Henriets crossed out; mostly featuring the full image, with the outer margins obscured by the album mounting. Occasionally slightly and barely noticeable stained, minimally rubbed in places, and only a few spots marginally frayed due to the nature of the material; sheet 10 is loose; otherwise in very fine and original condition. From the bibliographic collection of Léon Rattier, bearing his bookplate. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
