Biscaino, Bartolomeo The Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine. Oval etching. 15 x 11.9 cm. B. 33, TIB (Commentary) .033. During his brief artistic career, the Genoese painter and etcher Bartolomeo Biscaino created, in addition to a dozen paintings and numerous drawings, an extensive body of graphic work comprising about fifty etchings. Stylistically, after the initial influence of his teacher Valerio Castello, his work shows an orientation toward Castiglione and the works of Parmigianino. This sheet, too, is stylistically influenced by Parmigianino. The lightness of the line and the grace of the depiction are characteristic of Biscaino’s style. An excellent early print with a fine tone and a narrow margin around the plate edge.
