Binck, Jakob Portrait "Reinnier V.H. MXXV." Circular copperplate engraving. D. 6.8 cm. (15)25. B. VIII, pp. 296, 94; Passavant IV, p. 90. Very little is known about the training of the painter, copperplate engraver, and medalist Jakob Binck. In his youth, he was likely significantly influenced by the Nuremberg Dürer School, particularly the Beham brothers, and is said to have resided in the Netherlands around 1529. In the early 1530s, Binck lived in Copenhagen as court painter to King Christian III; he subsequently worked in Sweden, Königsberg, Antwerp, and again in Copenhagen. In 1553, he entered the service of the Prussian court in Königsberg. Judging by the spelling of his name, the subject of this small circular portrait appears to be of Dutch origin. Bartsch described the work as an autograph by Binck; Passavant, however, likely mistakenly considered the sheet to be a copy and described it as being of inferior quality. Excellent, even printing with the border line. In impeccable condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
