Bellange, Jacques Camp Scene Outside the City. Etching. 27.4 x 21.6 cm. Robert-Dumesnil 37, Walch 19, Worthen/Reed 28, Griffiths/Hartley 39. Signed. Lorraine cross with double C, secondary mark (both Griffiths/Hartley no. 29). Attempts have been made to interpret the depiction as Judith in Holofernes’ camp or as a variation on Bellona and Mars. Following more recent assumptions that the seated figure represents a male rather than a female (based on comparable stylistic elements in Bellange’s oeuvre), the scene may possibly have been inspired more by Torquato Tasso’s *Gerusalemme liberata* (1581). An excellent, harmonious print, mostly cut along the predominantly visible border line, with some areas cut minimally close to it. Faint and only scattered foxing spots, a tiny rust spot on the back of the soldier on the right, delicate creases from drying on the reverse, the upper left corner restored, other minor handling marks; otherwise, a very beautifully preserved copy. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
