Baudous, Robert Willemsz. de [*] The Story of Joseph. 10 (of probably 12) copperplate engravings, freely based on Lucas van Leyden. Each approx. 28.7 x 20.1 cm. Wurzbach 1, Hollstein 1–10, each I (of II), Filedt Kok (New Hollstein, Leyden) p. 260 (with reference). Mark: Aesculapian staff above a cross-shaped coat of arms. According to the literature, the suite is said to comprise 12 sheets; however, we have been unable to locate a complete set with 12 illustrations in public collections. Even the series in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, consists of 10 sheets—as does the set presented here, which features the same motifs. Magnificent prints with delicate plate tones from the first edition by Jan Jansonius, with a narrow margin around the plate edge, which is occasionally slightly rough. Overall, slightly dusty and showing only minimal signs of age; sporadically slightly stained and with light finger stains in the lower right corner; on the reverse, the usual smoothed center fold; otherwise in uniformly fine and original condition. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
