39 - Alexandru Ciucurencu, Still Life with Vases and Doll, oil on canvas, From 1932, when his scholarship in Paris was reduced, Ciucurencu settled in Romania. His major introduction to the Bucharest public came in 1934, with a solo exhibition at the Mozart Hall. From his earliest works, Ciucurencu saw himself as a successor to Ressu, Lhote and Pallady, yet forged an original style with a distinctive visual expression. Later, at his 1972 solo exhibition, the public discovered a different Ciucurencu, devoted above all to colour and form. The intensity of his palette and the capriciousness of his sensibility grew. It was no coincidence that Tudor Vianu described the artist as “one of our most gifted colourists.” The work *Still Life with Vessel and Doll* belongs to the artist’s series of still lifes with toys, a subject he often explored in the final phase of his career. The flowers, vessel and doll are arranged in a linear composition, suggesting strength and unity. Drawn with simplicity and assurance, the lines balance the chromatic vibrancy—essential elements in defining the composition and establishing the work’s place within this genre. The artist’s mastery extends beyond colour, line and light: he also introduces elements of folk art (the vessel and the doll) to refine his visual language and evoke the authenticity of the moment depicted. As Mircea Deac noted, Ciucurencu created a “dynamic of art” by directing the public’s attention to colour and its functions. In his canvases, Ciucurencu succeeds in capturing an unshakable naturalness through a gesture that is balanced, simple and powerful. (I.C.), signed and dated lower right in black, "AC, (1)971", 55 x 45.5
