Original vintage black-and-white silver gelatin photograph featuring a highly historic group portrait of the legendary Estrellas Cubanas (Cuban Stars) women's baseball team, dating to circa 1947. This extraordinary team portrait captures fourteen players in matching uniforms alongside their male manager on the playing field. The players are sporting matching caps, belts, and distinct jersey patches reading "Estrellas Cubanas", with several kneeling players in the front row donning vintage leather fielders' mitts and a catcher's chest protector. The reverse of the photograph contains a faint, authentic handwritten pencil inscription reading: "El Parque Marte", denoting the historic athletic and parade grounds in Havana, Cuba, where the team trained and competed. Formed in the mid-1940s and modeled directly after the American All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), the Estrellas Cubanas are foundational pioneers of international women's sports history. When the AAGPBL famously moved its entire spring training out of the United States to Havana, Cuba, in the spring of 1947, the Estrellas Cubanas played highly publicized exhibition games against the touring American women. This team served as the ultimate launchpad for iconic Cuban players like Isabel "Lefty" Álvarez, Luisa Gallegos, and Mirtha Marrero, who were discovered during these encounters and subsequently traveled to the United States to join the AAGPBL (a storied league later immortalized in the film A League of Their Own) This breathtaking photograph represents a museum-grade artifact documenting a critical, pre-Revolutionary intersection of Cuban athletic culture and women's professional baseball history. It is beautifully preserved in its original, unedited state with wonderful clarity, rich mid-tones, and light age-toning and silvering that underscores its mid-century authenticity.
