Original vintage black-and-white gelatin silver press photograph featuring University of Chicago football player and team captain James "Jimmie" Pyott, dated October 4, 1923. The full-length portrait frames the star Maroon halfback crouched slightly forward in an active posture on the practice field, firmly cradling a vintage watermelon-style football. The reverse of the photograph includes an attached paper news slug that reads: "CH17391- Here is a photograph of Jimmie Pyott Captain of the 1923-1924 Football team of the University of Chicago." The back features extensive newsroom provenance stamps, including a large blue ink property stamp reading "Copyright by Underwood & Underwood, Chicago, Ill." and a purple archive stamp from the Newspaper Enterprise Association (N.E.A.) Reference Department dated "OCT 4 1923". It also contains the handwritten catalog code (B2677). Jimmie Pyott was a celebrated leader and marquee back for legendary Hall of Fame coach Amos Alonzo Stagg’s University of Chicago squads during the height of the program's Big Ten era. A wonderful piece of early Midwestern collegiate football history, beautifully preserved with high-contrast sharpness and clear borders.
