Original vintage black-and-white gelatin silver press photograph capturing a historic action shot from the legendary matchup between Stanford University and the U.S. Military Academy (Army), played at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California, on December 28, 1929. This fascinating artifact is a very early example of commercial wirephoto technology, featuring the distinct visual texture and markings of a historic "telefoto" image transmission. It dramatically captures Stanford fullback Charles "Biff" Smalling (#14) sliding across the goal line to score a touchdown during the second quarter, while the referee raises his arms to signal the score. The reverse of the photograph features an attached paper news slug that reads: "TF119997 ARMY DEFEATED BY STANFORD. Army eleven for the second time went down to defeat at the hands of Stanford University at Palo Alto, Calif. by the score of 34-13. The service team which was out to revenge its defeat of last year found its task too much and in the last half of the game the Westerners scored almost at will. The above photo sent by telefoto from San Francisco, Calif., shows Smalling of Stanford scoring in the second quarter of the game to make the score, Stanford 14, Army 6. YOUR CREDIT LINE MUST READ (ACME)". The back is stamped with an inverted pink "Acme Newspictures" stamp and a blue archive stamp from the Newspaper Enterprise Association (N.E.A.) Reference Department dated "JAN 7 30". It also contains the handwritten archive code (B2000). This item represents an extraordinary cross-section of early gridiron lore and photojournalistic technology, capturing Glenn "Pop" Warner’s powerful Stanford team dominant on the West Coast. Preserved in its original, working newsroom archive state with excellent historic character. Medium: Original vintage silver gelatin press photograph Provenance: From the inventories of Artelisted.
