[THE CHARTRES BOOK OF HOURS. The Hours of Our Lady for Use in Chartres, newly printed in Paris, containing several beautiful stories—both in the calendar, the Hours of Our Lady, the Hours of the Cross, and the Hours of the Holy Spirit, as well as in the Seven Psalms and the Vigils. Paris: Jacques Kerver, 1558]. Small antique 8vo (137 x 192 mm), ivory vellum, with extensive gilded and blind-stamped decoration adorning the covers, smooth decorated spine, gilt edges (mid-19th-century binding). 82 ff. (of 100) in 12 quires (of 14) signed: A8, D-M8, N4, with the mark “Char [tres]” on quires D through N; ten woodcut borders enclose the initials “V F” (A8v°, E5, G2v°, H1, H6v°, G4v°, K5v°, L4, M6, & N2). The work is printed entirely in Gothic type, in black ink, with headings in blue and red ink. Fourteen large, full-page engraved woodcuts (D2v°, D6v°, D7v°, D8v°, E3v°, E6, E8v°, F3, F6, F8v°, G8v°, I7, L2v° & L5v°), numerous small woodcuts in the text—including twelve for the calendar—and framing woodcuts on every page. A copy with narrow margins and very slight losses of engravings on certain folios; folios A1, A8, and quires B and C are missing; folio A2 is incorrectly bound between A6 and A7; soiling, stains, and a damaged margin on quire A; stains on folios I7, I8, and K1. From the library of Mathias Duhan, King’s Procurator in the Diocese of Chartres, with a handwritten bookplate repeated on ff. D8, G8, and N4v. By Jean de Brie circa 1521 (Rel Soleil, *Les Heures gothiques*, pp. 262–270), who copied illustrations by Simon Vostre
