ETHIOPIA. Scenes and People, 1935. 21 vintage silver prints, 6 x 9 cm or 9 x 6 cm, perforated or unperforated. Minor tears or damage on 3 prints. The Second Italo-Ethiopian War, also known as the Abyssinian Campaign, pitted Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Italy against the Ethiopian Empire of Haile Selassie I from October 3, 1935, to May 9, 1936. It was Italy’s second attempt to seize the country following Ethiopia’s victory at Adwa in 1896 during Italy’s first attempt—a victory that was not only military but also political and diplomatic, as it had guaranteed this African state its independence and international recognition. Ethiopia and Italy were members of the League of Nations, which, according to its charter, was tasked with preventing wars through the principle of collective security. Provenance: Italian collection.
