9 PHOTOGRAPHY COFFEE-TABLE BOOKS. Lillian BASSMAN (1917–2012) and Paul HIMMEL (1914–2009). Die erste retrospektive / The First Retrospective. Kehrer, 2013. Hardcover with dust jacket, text in English and German. Like new, in original plastic wrap. Lillian Bassman’s work exudes a captivating elegance and a sure sense of style. She shaped fashion photography from the 1940s through the 1960s with her use of strong contrasts between light and dark, the grain of the printed photographs, and the geometric placement and shooting angles of her subjects. Bassman is one of the great female photographers in the fashion world. Her husband, Paul Himmel, also worked in this field for *Vogue*, *Harper’s Bazaar*, and many other magazines throughout his career. – Alexey BRODOVITCH (1898–1971). Alexey Brodovitch. Assouline, 2009. Like new, in blister pack. – Henri CARTIER-BRESSON (1908–2004) and Walker EVANS (1903–1975). Photographing America 1929–1947. Steidl, 2008. Like-new, in blister pack. – [Various Authors] Documentary and Anti-Graphic Photographs. Steidl, 2004. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the H. Cartier-Bresson Foundation. The book is hardcover, mint condition, in its original plastic wrap. Text in English and French. It was while cataloging Henri Cartier-Bresson’s archives—gathered for the creation of the Foundation—that a modest white Bristol board with strange eyes appeared, accompanied by the title: “Documentary and Anti-Graphic Photographs.” The names of the three artists forming the eyes were Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The exhibition dates were April–May 1935, and the venue was the Julien Lévy Gallery in New York. This discovery led to the reconstruction of the exhibition. This book brings these prints together for the first time since 1935 and presents the early work of three great masters of photography. – Walker EVANS (1903–1975). The Magazine Work. Steidl, 2014. Edited by David Campany. Text in English. Like new, in original plastic wrap. This beautifully printed book sheds light on a little-known aspect of Walker Evans’s career: his collaborations with avant-garde magazines and other well-known publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Forum, Life, and Fortune. His photographic essays, reproduced in their entirety, offer insight into how he worked to earn a living and how he engaged with a broad audience. – Lisa FONSSAGRIVES-PENN (1911–1992). He worked on contemporary culture, politics, literature, cinema, sports, dance, theater, opera, and the world of haute couture (Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin…).
