Marcel Gimond (1894–1961) Portrait of Micheline Joets Circa 1940 Bronze with a nuanced black patina Signed “M. Gimond” Bears the foundry’s stamp “CIRE PERDUE / BISCEGLIA” H. 33 x W. 22 x D. 23 cm, on a base H. 14.2 x W. 21.3 x D. 17 cm Through this head of a young woman, Marcel Gimond demonstrates his commitment to figurative sculpture. He primarily created busts of famous figures, politicians, and artists. He paid particular attention to the physical and psychological study of his models. The balance of the composition and the nature of the expression on this head reflect his quest for reality and life. The sculptor drew inspiration from his own reflections on sculpture, his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and his travels, during which he discovered the great sculptors of Antiquity and the Renaissance.
