HIRTZ (Lise) and Joan Miró. Once Upon a Time There Was a Little Magpie. 7 Songs and 3 Songs for Hyacinthe, with 8 color illustrations by Joan Miró. Paris, Éditions Jeanne Bucher, November 1928. In-4, gray cloth cover illustrated in black and green by Miró, laces (publisher’s binding). First edition of the first book illustrated by Joan Miró and the first book by Lise Deharme published under her real name. Illustrated with 8 color compositions by Joan Miró, reproduced using stencils. Printed in an edition of 300 copies. Copy bearing this autograph dedication by the author on the title page: “Preserve us from our friends for our enemies...” To Madame Paule de Beaumont, who was once an enemy. Very, very kindly, Lise Deharme. Paule de Beaumont (1894–1934) was part of the Parisian literary and artistic scene between the two world wars. This dedication perfectly embodies the sharp wit of Lise Deharme, the muse of Surrealism nicknamed the Queen of Spades, who here ironically twists the famous expression “Preserve me from my friends; I’ll take care of my enemies myself!” The dedication page and the title page are missing. The cover is very slightly soiled, and one binding strap is torn.
